Africa Rail 2018
French Ambassador Christophe Farnaud and the Consul General Sonia Doña Pérez attended the Africa Rail annual fair in Johannesburg, the largest railway event on the African continent, where Business France brought together 13 French transport companies railways and mobility. French companies (equipment, infrastructure, maintenance, line rehabilitation, signaling, security, etc.) are indeed recognized in South Africa and more broadly in Africa for their technological mastery and their ability to innovate.
South Africa has the largest railway network in Africa and the 11th largest railway network in the world, with a total of 30,400 km of railways. This network is for the most part now dedicated to the transport of ores and goods.
A strong voluntarism has emerged from the South African government to develop urban transport networks in recent years. This has resulted in the gradual implementation of major projects, in which the French offer occupies a preponderant place:
• Ratp Dev is a Gautrain operator, a crossover train linking OR Tambo, Johannesburg and Pretoria and is a member of the Bombela consortium
• Thales won a major call for tenders to modernize the signaling of the PRASA network (national operator of passenger transport)
• Alstom has signed the largest contract in its history for the delivery of 600 trains to PRASA, and is a member of the Gibela consortium
