Africa CHIC - The Good Luck Bar - 25 March 2017

The Alliance Française of Johannesburg, the French Institute of South Africa and The Good Luck Bar proudly present: AFRICA CHIC!

An evening dedicated to the beautiful sounds and garments of (not only) French-speaking Africa.

Saturday 25 March 2017 from 18:00
The Good Luck Bar (The Sheds @ 1 Fox)

Every year in March the Alliance Française of Johannesburg, the French Institute of South Africa and their partners celebrate French Language and French-speaking cultures. After a resounding success in 2016, Africa Chic! is back with a tribute to music and style. The evening will focus on the sounds of the Francophone African diaspora with 3 international acts, amongst them 2 local stars. Elegance will be highlighted with a fashion show of Brenda Khambule’s creations.

Mapumba’s career has taken him from the Democratic Republic of Congo to the shores of Cape town, spanning 16 years. Like a gatherer he has collected sounds, stories, rhythms, memories and turns them into songs. His voice will inspire you and take you through a bag of emotions full of African flavours.

BKO Quintet was born during the state of emergency in Bamako (2012), emerging from the meeting of four Malian and one French musician. Their music blends tradition and modernity, acoustic and electric sounds, harmony and trance in what they themselves call trad actual. BKO Quintet’s reputation as a live band is huge, with tens of concerts on all continents. They will perform in Joburg in the middle of their Southern African tour, organized and supported by the Alliance Française and the French Institute of South Africa.

Trésor’s first language is Music but he is also fluent in English, French and Swahili. His songs reflect a peregrine of life shared by so many on the continent of Africa. He left Goma in the Eastern DRC to head for Durban in 2007 with the sole purpose of pursuing a professional music career. He managed to hustle his way into the local Durban music scene, co-founding Durban afro-fusion band Maisha in 2008 and was soon playing alongside the likes of Lira, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Freshly Ground... the rest is History!
